Product OKR example

An objective about whether new users get value - and stay - instead of how many features shipped.

The goal

Make the new onboarding the reason people stay

Due the end of the quarter; check in weekly. Numbers are examples - change them to yours.

Activation rate
Each check-in is the new reading

Week-4 retention
Each check-in is the new reading
22% → 30%Activation that doesn't last isn't activation.
Time to first value
Each check-in is the new reading
25 minutes → 10 minutes (should go down)The onboarding's job, as one number that should go down.
Weekly users of the new feature
Each check-in is the new reading
10% → 25%Shows whether the launch is used, not just shipped.

GoalNexa forecasts each metric from its check-ins and gives the goal a health badge - on track, at risk or off track - long before the end of the quarter.

Create a goal in GoalNexa: "Make the new onboarding the reason people stay", due the end of the quarter (ask me for the date).
Metrics:
- Activation rate (unit: %): start 35%, target 50%, latest reading
- Week-4 retention (unit: %): start 22%, target 30%, latest reading
- Time to first value (unit: minutes): start 25 minutes, target 10 minutes, latest reading
- Weekly users of the new feature (unit: %): start 10%, target 25%, latest reading
Check-ins weekly. Show me the draft before creating it, and let me change the numbers.

In the app

  1. Create your free account and pick "Website" in the first-run steps (or "New goal" on the dashboard).
  2. Add the goal "Make the new onboarding the reason people stay" with its date, then its 4 metrics - start, target and unit as above. For an amount that adds up, set "Each check-in is" to "An amount to add to the total"; for a target per week or month, set "Target is for".
  3. Set each metric's check-in schedule to "Weekly" so reminders keep the numbers current.

Tips

  • Retention lags: expect its forecast to settle only after a few weekly readings.
  • Comment on the goal when you ship a change - the timeline then explains the jumps in the chart.
